Teaching Mission
My goals in teaching the cello are threefold:
Guide students towards a balanced and comfortable technique
Impart efficient practice methods
Help students develop confidence
These three goals will be developed steadily in this cello studio. A balanced and comfortable technique will be gained through grounding in fundamentals. Mastering the fundamentals will grant students ease in playing the cello, a major prerequisite for creative enjoyment of cello playing. In addition to cello technique, students will receive training in aural skills and music theory, forming them into more well-rounded musicians with a nuanced understanding of their craft.
Learning how to practice effectively is one of the most important aspects of being a musician! Most of a musician's improvement happens in the practice room, not in the lesson. Students will be taught efficient practice methods, enabling independent progress.
Musicians are their own worst critics. Students will be guided towards constructive thought patterns to develop confidence. They will learn to identify areas of improvement while also being able to identify their strengths. Twentieth-century cellist and pedagogue Gregor Piatigorsky conveys this point with gravitas (skip to 30:32):
When all three goals are achieved, they feed into each other and music making becomes one of the most fun, compelling, and profound experiences you can have in life.
